Attention fall athletes:
Sports physicals to be held in August
July 1,
2009 - The Fall 2009 athletic season
will be here before you know it! Modified
sports begin the first week of school in
September. This includes modified
football, boys and girls soccer, and boys
and girls cross country.
Modified
sports physicals will be held from
8:30-11:30 a.m. August 3 in the C. J.
Hooker Middle School Nurse's Office.

Celebration of the Arts
features work from across curriculum
June 26,
2009 - The first-ever “Celebration of
the Arts” was held May 19-20 at the C. J.
Hooker Middle School.
Creative
visual projects from across the middle
school’s curriculum were on display,
including “big books” written and
illustrated by eighth grade English
students, clay replicas of French monuments
by French students, brochures and
advertisements designed by students in
Family and Consumer Science classes, graph
pictures created by math students, and of
course, artwork by art students.

Students work together
to help shape future of rainforests
May 27,
2009 - This spring, students in Mrs.
Mesic’s sixth grade math classes took part
in the Earth’s Birthday Project. The
students worked in small groups to analyze
different sets of actual data and research
collected from the Amazon Rainforest. They
recreated graphs of their data and presented
all of their findings in an oral
presentation to their class.

2009 - On May 13, author Susan Beth
Pfeffer, a resident of Middletown, paid a
visit to students at the C. J. Hooker Middle
School, where she talked with students about
her life as an author.
To date,
Pfeffer has written more than 60 books.
About David was awarded the South
Carolina Young Adult Book Award. The Year
Without Michael is an ALA Best Book for
Young Adults and winner of the South
Carolina Young Adult Book Award; it was also
named by the American Library Association as
one of the hundred best books for teenagers
written between 1968-1993. |

CJH students develop virtual simulations
through "Active Worlds" computer program
May 8,
2009 - Twelve students from the C. J.
Hooker Middle School have been working
collaboratively to develop 21st century “Web
2.0” computer programming skills.
The
students, who are a student spin-off group
of the Orange-Ulster BOCES “Emerging
Technology” group for teachers, meet during
one class period every other day in the
computer lab. They are exploring the
computer program "Active Worlds," which is
an interactive, immersive digital world
similar to that of popular programs like
"The Sims" or "Second Life."
