GHS junior Lindsay White qualifies for Junior Olympics

Lindsay WhiteFebruary 13, 2012 Lindsay White, a junior at Goshen High School, has qualified for the Junior Olympics for the 100 meter and 200 meter backstroke in swimming.

Lindsay, 16, qualified for the Junior Olympics with 1:05.33 on the 100 yard backstroke and 2:16.53 for the 200 yard backstroke. She is less than a second from qualifying for the Senior Mets on the 200 backstroke – a goal she plans to accomplish.

She began swimming at the age of 12 a member of the Middletown Recreation Swim Team Barracudas, a year-round instructional and competitive swimming organization. She now swims with Aqua Gems Swim Team, based out of Warwick and Middletown.

Although she practices or swims in meets almost every day, Lindsay believes that her dedication to swimming has positively affected her life – and her future.

“It teaches you self-discipline and time-management skills, which are useful for school and for when I’m in college,” she said. “It also makes you tough; swimming competitively is physically and emotionally taxing, but you learn that you can do what you set your mind to and rise above any obstacles.”

Lindsay plans to swim in college, and is considering a major in sports medicine or psychology and criminology. Her ultimate dream is to coach a college-level swim team.

The Junior Olympics will be held the last weekend in March at the Nassau County Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Lindsay is the daughter of Cindy and Ed White of Goshen.
