January 20, 2012 – On January 10, Jeff and Adina Bialas, owners of J & A Farm in Goshen, visited the Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School in Goshen to teach kindergarten students in Katherine Eichenhofer’s class all about growing plants. Their daughter, Claire, is a student in the class.
Students viewed photos of the farm on the classroom SMART Board while the farmers explained how they prepare the soil, plant the seeds, take care of the plants and harvest. They also saw pictures of the different produce grown on the farm and discussed how the different vegetables grow in different ways – some under the soil, and some above.
Each student received a paper pot with two sections, and planted lettuce in one section, and peas in the other. All of the plants were placed into two trays to produce a Classroom Garden.
“We will be observing the plants using the five senses, and we will write about our observations and experiences,” said Teacher Katherine Eichenhofer. “We will also learn about healthy eating. Because we planted peas and lettuce, once the plants are big enough, the students will be able to eat what they’ve grown.”
